ADDITION/REMODEL

SAMUEL NOAKES HOUSE

Located in downtown Winchester, VA, this historic structure had seen several renovations in it's close to 200 year history.  The goal of architects Reader & Swartz, P.C. was to reestablish the buildings intended layout as a two independent 2-story dwellings (at some point the buildings had been joined internally and functioned as first and second-floor apartments). After stripping the interior back to its structural bones and with a general guideline for how the spaces would be organized, Houseworks,LLC designed and built nearly every interior detail.  Much of the original structure was left exposed and several elements were salvaged and reused in the remodel.  The result is a fresh, modern space with a nod to the building's history.  This project was featured in Katie Hutchinson's book "The New Small House" from Taunton Press.

midcentury addition/remodel

This contemporary addition to a lovely midcentury home was designed and built by Houseworks in 2018/19.  The low single-pitch roofline and Ipe shiplap siding of the addition play off the strong horizontal themes of the existing brick exterior.  Many of the existing interior spaces were fully remodeled including the kitchen, two bathrooms, and the laundry area.  The deck was enlarged and refaced with new Kebony decking and a cedar and cable railing.

Cedar Creek Porch

An existing deck was remodeled while adding a new covered space to escape the sun, greatly adding value to the owners' outdoor experience.  The majority of the structure was built using pressure-treated wood which was then painted black.  The guardrails are stainless cable railing.  The decking is by Timbertech.  Designed by Houseworks,LLC.
